Getting ready to go in a couple of weeks

Getting ready to go, first to Botswana then to Zimbabwe and finally to Tanzania.

Hopes and fears; optimism and anxiety.

We're so looking forward to this trip, going back to places we grew up but which will certainly have changed enormously. And will that matter?

Botswana.

There's no worry here because we'll be visiting friends. And I loved their home in Molepole when I was last there. (Peter's not yet visited them there.) Jes will pick us up from the airport so we don't need to organize anything other than picking up our train tickets for Bulawayo. Now there's a reason for anticipating either the best or the worst! It may be wonderful being in a train across the country, remembering childhood journeys sleeping in bunks. Or it may be a nightmare. We can only wait and see.

Zimbabwe

As the nice person who changed our money said, "Zimbabwe? That's an interesting place to choose to go on holiday." Yes indeed. We are reading the Zimbabwe news with great interest. Are they still in the throes of a cash crisis? (i.e. no money to be had from ATMs or banks?) Probably. Will the roads be ok for us to drive to the Great Zimbabwe ruins? We are really hoping so because we've arranged a car.

Tanzania

Our plans keep changing! There are just the fixed points of Dar es Salaam and Mbeya  - comparing then and now.
That's Oyster Bay which we'll visit and where we'll take a photo seventy something years later.
And that's Mbeya nearly 60 years ago. It's quite a lot bigger by now but I think we may not manage to climb up here to take the picture.

  1. Gosh what an adventure and so many unknown familiar experiences to look forward to with joy and trepidation. I hope it all does what you want it to do. And I just love that little Mo in her hat by the river!!
